Sacrosanct principle of seniority in teaching

Even now, in a scandalous context of teacher shortage, it is the beginners who are assigned to the most difficult classes. However, it is well known that 25% of new teachers leave the profession within the first five years of practice: the link is obvious.

I am 83 years old; I started teaching in 1959 at Esther-Blondin secondary school, in Saint-Henri; as I was new, I was assigned to the group which had the lowest results, therefore to the most difficult group. Obviously, after a few months of professional torture, I resigned! (Fortunately, after additional studies, I made a career in adult francization…)

Recently, the president of the Federation of Education Unions (FSE-CSQ), Josée Scalabrini, when asked by a journalist whether beginning teachers should not be given the easiest tasks, bristled when responding that, to retain experienced teachers, they must retain their right to choose their task according to their seniority, in short, “their birthright”…

“The more things change, the more they stay the same”… in teaching too!
