An opportunity transformed. After Japan’s victory against Samoa, Argentina no longer had a choice. Beaten by England (27-10), then victorious against Samoa (19-10), the Pumas had to win against a team from Chile which did not collect any points during the tournament. They responded by stifling the Condores 59-5, Saturday September 30, with an imperial Nicolas Sanchez. For his hundredth selection, the Argentine fly-half scored the first try of the match (9th) and converted six (9th, 16th, 23rd, 46th, 64th and 69th).
It was the first opposition between the two South American teams in a World Cup. Its competition now over, Chile leaves with four important losses: 43-10 against Samoa, 71-0 against England, 42-12 against Japan and 59-5 against Argentina. Thanks to this victory, the Argentines return to level with the Japanese, whom they will face on October 8 to accompany England in the quarter-finals.
