(La Paz) Former left-wing president Evo Morales, who led Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, announced on Sunday that he intends to run for president in 2025.
“We have decided to accept the demands of our activists and of so many sisters and brothers […] to be a candidate for the presidency of our beloved Bolivia,” Mr. Morales declared on social networks, in conflict with current President Luis Arce, his political heir, elected in 2020.
Evo Morales, 63, accused the Arce government of seeking to sideline him politically, in particular by wrongly implicating him in corruption cases.
The ruling party he created, the MAS (Movement towards Socialism) today led by Mr. Arce, must at a congress next week decide on a date for internal primaries.
The question of Mr. Morales’ eligibility is, however, unresolved. Justice Minister Ivan Lima said Bolivia’s Constitutional Court must decide whether, under the Constitution, the ex-president was legally entitled to run for a fourth term.
