“1:15 p.m. Saturday.” The village of Kenza

A week after the terrible earthquake in Morocco which left more than 2,900 dead, “1:15 p.m. on Saturday” offers a moving testimony. That of Kenza, from a small village in the High Atlas almost completely razed by this earthquake.

On the night of Friday September 8 to Saturday September 9, 2023, the lives of millions of people changed in a fraction of a second. A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco right in the heart, leaving more than 2,900 dead and 5,500 injured according to the official count on September 13. The epicenter was located in the province of al-Haouz, about seventy kilometers southwest of Marrakech.

The deadly earthquake that devastated Morocco triggered a surge of solidarity throughout the country and beyond. The images of the bodies found under the rubble and the survivors who lost everything, all these lives destroyed, touched many foreigners and Moroccans, including Kenza Fenjiro who the teams of “1:15 p.m. on Saturday” (X, #1:15 p.m.) followed.

An extraordinary chain of solidarity

Upset by the earthquake, this Moroccan who works in the hotel industry went to the region of her childhood, the beautiful Ouirgane valley in the High Atlas, where her family runs a hotel. Only thirty kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, some of these mountain villages, sometimes difficult to access, were literally blown away.

After the shock of the destruction, Kenza tried to help the inhabitants at her own level. Comfort them in the face of the tragedy, target their needs, participate in the distribution of food, support as best as possible those who have lost everything.

A report by Jean-Sébastien Desbordes, Matthieu Martin, Stéphane Kenech and Morgane du Liège.
