New tensions on the Italian island of Lampedusa, where more than 6,000 migrants arrived in less than 24 hours. The situation on site is critical this Friday, September 15. The Italian government is calling for help.
Hundreds of migrants lined up, sitting on the ground. An endless queue. On the island of Lampedusa, the Red Cross reception center is overwhelmed. Planned to take care of 400 people, it must now manage several thousand. Then the evacuations began. The police fill the boats slowly, heading towards Sicily. Faced with this unprecedented influx of migrants, Italy is now asking other European countries for help. A source of tensions, particularly with France.
Find common ground
Because during a wave like this, many migrants try to enter French territory illegally, often via the Alpes-Maritimes. Other countries such as Germany also criticize Italy for not respecting the agreements in place on the right to asylum. The Germans also suspended their voluntary reception mechanism for migrants yesterday. A decision with which France has not yet aligned itself. The Minister of the Interior must take stock of the situation this Friday with his services and the prefects. He will then meet with his German and Italian counterparts to try to find common ground.
