The Liberals are launching a non-partisan appeal to Culture Minister Nathalie Roy to prevent the Maison Chevalier heritage building from being sold to a private company in Old Quebec.
In a letter sent to Mme Roy, the deputy Christine St-Pierre, spokesperson for culture, suggests convening in particular heritage experts from the national capital in order to find “a lasting solution” for the house built in 1752.
“It is now important that our political affiliations do not undermine the protection of Maison Jean-Baptiste Chevalier,” writes the deputy. So I extend my hand to you. “
In recent days, several voices have been raised to oppose this government-authorized transaction, underlines Mr.me St Pierre.
“I regret the flippancy with which this sale, made on the sly, was authorized by your government when many groups dedicated to the protection of heritage have spoken out to denounce the lack of transparency of the Coalition d’avenir Québec in this matter”, she wrote in the same breath, accusing Mme Roy to flout a heritage legacy.
October 22 in The duty, the president and CEO of the Musée de la civilization, Stéphan La Roche, defended himself for having proceeded in opacity for the sale of the Maison Chevalier, which had been the property of the institution for 35 years.
In a notarized transaction on October 21, 1986, the building was ceded by the government as a donation to the Museum at the cost of a symbolic dollar. The state owned Maison Chevalier since 1956.
