Exit the little blue bird? The whimsical businessman and owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, communicated, on the evening of Saturday July 22, on a possible change of name and logo for his social network, bought in 2022 during an operation which amounts to 44 billion dollars (39.5 billion euros). “And soon we will say goodbye to the Twitter brand and little by little all the birds”, he first tweeted.
Two minutes later, he posted another message: “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll upload it worldwide tomorrow.” Elon Musk then explained that the choice of the X made it possible to“embody the imperfections in all of us that make us unique”insisting that he liked this letter.
He also pinned to his Twitter profile a video posted by a user of the platform showing the current Twitter logo, a blue bird, replaced by a flashing X.
Elon Musk has already changed the name of the company, which became X Corp in April. Saturday, in response to a question from a user who asked if Twitter would be accessible from the x.com address, the billionaire replied: “Of course.” X.com was the name and website of the online bank founded by the businessman, which later became the online payment service PayPal. Elon Musk added that the tweets would be called Xs after the name change.
These changes would come at a time of difficulty for Twitter. Elon Musk has laid off around half of the staff and the platform’s advertising revenue has fallen by half, according to the billionaire. The social network faces a myriad of competing apps, including newcomer Threads, launched by Meta.
