The balance sheet is heavy. The fall of a bus into a ravine in southern Mexico on Wednesday July 5 left 29 dead, including a child, and 19 injured, according to the Oaxaca state prosecutor. Rescuers are still digging through the rubble in this mountainous area. Six injured were unconscious at the time of being hospitalized, according to civil protection.
The accident took place in the town of Magdalena Peñasco, in the early morning andalmost long hours of travel. Before leaving the road, this bus had covered more than a thousand kilometers since its departure, the previous evening, from Mexico City. If the local media mentions a problem with the brakes, “the driver probably lost control”, said the secretary of security of the state government, during a press conference. The prosecutor himself first favored the trail of “mechanical fault” and announced the opening of an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident.
The state of Oaxaca is a popular tourist destination in Mexico. The country is facing a proliferation of passenger coach accidents in recent years, to the point that organizations are calling for tougher regulations.
