Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries Monday after a shooting in downtown Toronto that police say may be a result of road rage.
Police said they were called shortly after 6 a.m. to 7 Charles Street West, just one block south of the busy intersection of Yonge and Bloor streets.
Duty Inspector Michelle Olszevski said officers found a man and a woman in their 20s with gunshot wounds.
Inspector Olszevski says they were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are currently in serious but not life-threatening condition.
She says that prior to the shooting, police received a call about a drive-by stunt on Yonge Street shortly before 6 a.m. and the vehicles and occupants involved were also at the scene of the shootings.
According to Inspector Olszevsk, it is possible that the shooting took place because of road rage.
A resident of a nearby condo, Aiman Fatima said she saw a group of ten to twelve people, mostly in their twenties, talking without issue before hearing 12 to 14 gunshots and seeing people fleeing the area.
Police say an unknown number of suspects fled the scene after the shooting in a vehicle described as a black SUV, which was last seen heading north on Bay Street.
The victims may have been involved in the car stunts, but this is unconfirmed.
Streets have been closed in the area, police say, but subway users should not be affected.
