An investigation has been opened for attempted murder, AFP learned from a judicial source.

Vincent Jeanbrun, mayor of this town in the Paris suburbs, L’Haÿ-les-Roses, denounced in a press release published on Twitter “an assassination attempt of unspeakable cowardice”.

At around 1:30 a.m. (2330 GMT Saturday), while he was at City Hall “like for three nights” to deal with urban violence, rioters “threw a ram car at (his) home before setting it on fire to set fire to (his) house,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter.

His wife and “two young children” slept there, he said.

It was while trying to “protect” the family and “escape the assailants” that the wife and one of the children were injured, according to the mayor.

His wife “was injured in the knee and is currently hospitalized, one of the children was slightly injured,” the mayor’s entourage told AFP. “Both children are very, very shocked,” it was added.

According to the same source, the perpetrators set fire to the ram-car, but also to that of the family, before being put to flight by the police and the firefighters, “intervened “very quickly”.

“Last night, a milestone was crossed in horror and ignominy,” said the mayor of this city of more than 30,000 inhabitants in his press release. “If my priority today is to take care of my family, my determination to protect and serve the Republic is greater than ever,” he continues.
