Ottawa to unveil national climate change adaptation strategy

Canada’s plan to make communities more resilient to climate change will be unveiled on Tuesday.

The final version of the National Adaptation Strategy is expected to be similar to the draft released last fall, which included goals for building resilience to wildfires, extreme heat and major storms, such as hurricanes.

The plan includes measures to protect people from extreme heat, updated flood maps for high-risk areas, and raising public awareness about the specific risks people might face in their own communities.

The federal government has been consulting with provinces and territories over the past seven months to get buy-in for the plan, which will require all levels of government to work together.

The plan comes as Canada faces its worst wildfire season on record, smashing the record for the most area burned in a single year in less than six months.

Ottawa earmarked $1.6 billion in new spending for the adaptation plan last fall and is expected to put some more money on the table with Tuesday’s announcement.
