The federal budget is adopted in third reading by the Senate

(OTTAWA) The federal budget became law after passing third reading in the Senate without amendment Thursday night.

The Liberal government unveiled its fiscal plan at the end of March, promising to create a national dental plan and spend billions on clean energy incentives.

The budget gives low-income people a larger GST rebate, which the government has called a grocery rebate, and enhances the Canada workers benefit.

The bill passed the House of Commons earlier this month with the support of the New Democratic Party.

The Conservatives tried to introduce 900 amendments during this debate, calling instead for a balanced budget plan.

The Liberal budget projections do not foresee an end to deficit spending in the next few years.
