A fire broke out on Sunday in Colmar (Haut-Rhin) on a 2,000 m² tire storage site, reports France Bleu Alsace. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. on a wild tire depot located “at the back of a reception area for Travelers“, according to the mayor of Colmar Eric Straumann. The fire is now “under control”, indicates the prefecture of Haut-Rhin, in a press release.
16 homes were evacuated, about 70 people who were taken care of and will be able to return to their homes “in the night”, according to the prefecture. It specifies that the plume of smoke does not contain any “danger for the population”.
According to the mayor: “The houses and caravans were under the smoke but are not affected”. Two power lines near the fire were cut. The land is bordered on a part by the railway. Consequence: train traffic has been interrupted between Colmar and Sélestat, in both directions since 7:30 p.m. “The SNCF is carrying out checks, tests on the tracks and on the signage in order to consider the resumption of train circulation”specifies the press release from the prefecture.
An intervention that should last three hours
A security perimeter has been set up around the site. 115 firefighters and 30 intervention vehicles are on site, as well as the municipal police and the national police. The first smoke analyzes did not reveal any particular toxicity, specifies the Haut-Rhin prefecture. Extinguishing operations continue.
