The “Toz” of discord. This Saturday, May 13, many French viewers were shocked by the reaction of La Zarra to the announcement of the results of the competition. The representative of France for this edition addressed, facing the camera, a “middle finger” to millions of people in front of their screen. Faced with the controversy which quickly grew, the Canadian artist immediately wanted to explain herself and ensure that her gesture was misinterpreted.
“It was not a gesture that is negative. On the contrary, it is a gesture of disappointment that we use between friends”. A defense that did not convince many people. Invited this Tuesday, May 16 in “Media Culture” on European 1, Stéphane Bern gave his opinion on this case. The crowned head specialist commented on the competition and claims not to have seen the “finger” right away.

“We hadn’t really seen it (the middle finger live) but afterwards on social networks. Afterwards, there was a crisis meeting”assured Yori’s companion before explaining that he had “tried to manage what is called ‘damage control'”. “There was Christian Louboutin, the press office, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, the head of the French delegation. That’s where I learned what a ‘toz’ was. It’s a middle finger in North Africa. In Quebec, it’s generational and cultural. It’s nice”he adds in an attempt to calm the situation, several days after the controversy.
Despite this explanation, Stéphane Bern still confided to Philippe Vandel that he received many messages to tell him: “‘You speak, it’s double middle finger in fact'”. The host of France 2 does not wish to overwhelm La Zarra. Indeed, he insisted on recalling that “France always passes for the arrogant and the bad loser”. Always on European 1he also announced that the Quebec artist could take advantage of this controversy to launch t-shirts “with a ‘toz’ to make money”. An idea that made him laugh a lot.
