Three suspects wanted in India in connection with the Akwesasne tragedy

Police in India are looking for three men in connection with the death of a family from Gujarat who were trying to travel to the United States by boat via Akwesasne, a Mohawk community located between Quebec, Ontario and the state of New York, in March.

The police department alleges the men were involved in running immigration businesses used by people to enter countries with false documents.

Four Indian nationals whose bodies were among the eight people rescued from the St. Lawrence River had come to Canada on tourist visas from their home state of Gujarat. They were the father, Praveen Chaudhari, 50; of the mother, Daksha, 45 years old; their daughter, Vidhi, 23; and their son, Meet, 20.

Achal Tyagi, superintendent of police in Mehsana town, Gujarat, said authorities had issued a wanted notice for three men: Nikulsinh Vihol, Sachin Vihol and Arjunsinh Chavda.

They face criminal charges of culpable homicide not constituting murder, breach of trust, cheating and dishonest inducement to deliver property and conspiracy.

Mr Tyagi says a police complaint has been filed against the men and the case is still in the early stages of investigation. According to this complaint, translated by The Canadian Pressat least one of the men lived in Canada.

The other four people who died were members of a Romanian family in the Toronto area who fled after receiving an eviction order. They have been identified as Florin Iordache, his wife Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache, and their Canadian-born children, two-year-old daughter Evelin and one-year-old son Elyen.
