They hold the first European title in their history. The Asvel players were crowned in the Eurocup on Wednesday April 12, after crushing their Galatasaray counterparts in the return final (85-57), a week after the demonstration at the Astroballe (95-56). To win the second best European basketball competition, behind the Euroleague, the Lyonnaises were carried by Marine Johannes, author of 20 points and six assists.
After the first leg, coach David Gautier slipped: “I never could have imagined this“. But, after winning by 39 points at home, they wandered again, winning by a margin of 28 points. Enough to bring a few tears down the cheeks of some opponents.
“We didn’t stress too much. They repeated last week’s performance. We’re going to celebrate this title, the second in our young history, even if the season isn’t over”, reacted the deputy president of Asvel, Marie-Sophie Obama. The Villeurbanne team is currently leading the French championship, but two regular season days are still to be played before the playoffs.
