The Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery, paralyzed since January by snow and a strike, will once again become accessible to the bereaved on March 31. However, the labor dispute that has been going on there for years is still intense.
The site and its 33 kilometers of road have not been maintained since last January 12, when the employees responsible for the maintenance of the site joined the unionized office workers in their unlimited general strike.
The tombs and mausoleums will soon be able to be visited again due to the melting snow. Certain paths will remain inaccessible “for a few additional days”, qualified the managers of the cemetery in a press release on Wednesday.
Mausoleum burial and cremation services continue to be offered. La Fabrique de la parish Notre-Dame de Montréal indicated that “interments in the field will only be able to resume for the benefit of bereaved families if a special agreement is reached with the operations union or if the strike of operation employees ends”.
A demonstration for the reopening of the cemetery to the public took place recently in front of the main entrance. This labor dispute has been going on for four years.
