Alberta | The families of the shot officers will each receive $100,000

(Edmonton) The families of the two Edmonton police officers shot dead this week will both receive $100,000 from the Alberta Heroes Fund, Premier Danielle Smith announced.

Mme Smith made the announcement during her weekly radio show where she addressed the deaths of officers Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan.

The police were killed by a teenager who then committed suicide, while they intervened in a building on a case of non-violent domestic dispute.

Mme Smith said the Alberta Heroes Fund was created in 2020 and the money will help families deal with the “costs associated with dealing with this horrific tragedy.”

The fund was set up as part of the Safety and Red Tape Reduction Act 2020 and the government’s website says it aims to recognize the sacrifices of first responders who die in the line of duty.

Mme Smith also encouraged people to donate to police families through the GoFundMe platform, a fundraiser that was set up by the Edmonton Police Foundation.
