Alfred Pellan’s “Saint Patrick” has found its new home. The once threatened ceramic mural will finally be exhibited to the public at the Société d’histoire de la Haute-Yamaska.
The 1958 mosaic was removed from the exterior walls of a former Irish school in Granby slated for demolition. After several procrastination, the City of Granby decided to keep it thanks to support of nearly $80,000 from Quebec.
This mural has found its final home in the offices of the Haute-Yamaska Historical Society, Mayor Julie Bourdon confirmed Friday morning. “These offices are inside the same building as the MRC de La Haute-Yamaska,” which is being rebuilt on the site of the Irish school, she explains. “It’s physically in the same place, but not on the outside wall, rather inside. It closes the loop. »
The public will be able to freely admire this heritage work of art since the premises of the historical society will be open to all. The 840 kilogram work is monumental: it measures 2.3 meters wide and 3.6 meters high. Installing this mural again outside also raised “different technical issues”, notes the elected official.
“Saint Patrick” should be visible to the public again in the fall, “if all goes well”, said Mayor Bourdon. Until then, some restoration work will keep the work in good condition. The total bill for this work has not been disclosed.
