(Puebla) At least 17 people have died in Mexico in a bus accident carrying migrants from South and Central America, authorities said Monday.
Fifteen other people were injured, five of whom are in critical condition, in this accident which occurred on Sunday on a road between the states of Oaxaca and Puebla.
The bus was carrying 45 people, migrants “from Venezuela, Colombia and Central America” who were trying to get to the United States, Puebla municipal official Julio Huerta told a press conference.
A 56-year-old Colombian is among the victims, according to the Foreign Ministry in Bogota. Three Colombians were also injured and hospitalized “in serious but stable condition”, said the same source.
Migrants crossing into Mexico from South and Central America in hopes of reaching the United States often travel in overcrowded modes.
At the beginning of the month, eight Guatemalans and a Honduran died in the accident of the minibus which transported them.
