Toronto | John Tory will remain mayor until the end of the budget process

(Toronto) Toronto’s budget chief said Monday that Mayor John Tory, who recently announced plans to step down after an affair with a former staffer, has pledged to complete the city’s budget process.

Councilman Gary Crawford said Mr Tory had indicated he would remain mayor during Wednesday’s crucial budget debate.

Mr Tory stunned observers on Friday when he announced plans to quit after acknowledging an “inappropriate relationship” with a person who previously worked on his team.

On Monday morning, the City confirmed that Mr. Tory had not submitted a resignation letter and that his office had not responded to questions about when he would leave.

Experts had speculated that Mr. Tory would wait to officially resign after the adoption of his budget, the first he prepared under new powers granted by the Ontario government.

The province clarified that powers, including a veto over budget changes, would not be transferred to an interim mayor.
