The room Baobabby Théâtre Motus, created in Montreal almost 14 years ago, will be presented at the New Victory Theater in New York from March 11 to 19.
Written and directed by Hélène Ducharme, co-founder of Théâtre Motus, Baobab premiered at the Festival Petits bonheurs in the summer of 2009. This is a tale written by the author of Navel And Bubbles following a trip to Mali and Senegal.
Ducharme had imagined this tale narrated by the village griot – interpreted by Widermir Normil – in which a baobab tree falls in love with the earth, plunges its roots into it and has four children. But the sun, jealous of this love affair, refuses to set and burns the earth.
The characters use costume masks, wooden puppets and multiple musical instruments (balafon, djembe, kora) to tell us this story (intended for 4 to 7 year olds) repeated a few times in Quebec since its creation.
