The owner’s tour | Safe bet in Mount Royal

Located in Mont-Royal, this house extended to meet the needs of a family of six benefits from a magnificent courtyard with an in-ground swimming pool. Change of scenery guaranteed in the heart of Montreal.

Claude Marcotte bought this stone cottage about twenty years ago. “I had already lived in Mount Royal and I decided to come back because it’s an exceptional place. An oasis of greenery to raise children, especially since the house bordered by a park is particularly well located on rue Carlyle,” he says.

The proximity of schools – notably Saint-Clément and Carlyle within walking distance – and public transport convinced the owner to acquire this charming house, large enough at the time to comfortably accommodate four people.

The family quickly grew with one and then two additional children, so Claude and his spouse Josée first renovated the existing building. They finally decided a few months later to make new renovations, while carrying out a major expansion. “We doubled the area by adding a wing on three levels at the back of the house. This contemporary construction harmonizes well with the original building thanks to the reminder of stone and a unity of hues.

Quality first

For the works, the masters of the place opted for noble materials of high quality in neutral colors. Thus, natural stone, marble and travertine coverings provide texture, including on the walls, and contrast with warm wooden floors.

The kitchen, furnished with dark finish cabinets and complemented by stainless steel counters, is now on the ground floor of the new section. “Its former location has been replaced by a mudroom [vestiaire d’entrée] “, emphasizes the owner.

Throughout the residence, numerous storage spaces are equipped with superb wooden doors, including the wardrobe room (walk-in) adjoining the master suite. Organized on the upper floor of the new section of the house, this space is entirely reserved for Josée and Claude.

The couple’s 15-year-old son chose to occupy the basement bedroom and bathroom, with the other three bedrooms located on the second floor.

Anxious to create a comfortable universe for each family activity, Claude added a gym-family room in the basement that opens directly onto the courtyard. “We took advantage of the renovations to redo all the landscaping. Our garden is exceptional and includes an inground pool; we put a granite coating on the ground, then we created a shower and a bathroom for the outside. »

Children grown up

Twenty years have passed. Josée and Claude own a beautiful property in the countryside on the shores of Lake Memphremagog where they spend a lot of time. Also, the older ones have left the nest. There are only two teenagers aged 19 and 15 left under their roof.

“We would like a smaller house and also be closer to universities by settling in Westmount or Outremont. We’ve had some great times here, and I’m sure a new family will find happiness there,” says the owner.
