The composting pilot project on the commercial artery of Mont-Royal Avenue is “successful”, according to the assessment made by the Société de développement de l’avenue du Mont-Royal (SDAMR).
A total of 22 companies and businesses took part in this trial balloon, which began in November 2021. Lasting 18 months, the project aimed to divert 100 tonnes of compostable materials from garbage cans.
A target that would have been exceeded, according to the SDAMR. The organization estimates that at the end of the pilot project, next January, 30 tonnes of organic matter more than the initial objective will have been composted.
The project was adapted to each trade, in particular according to the space available for the storage of the bins and for the collection, recalled the SDAMR.
Twice a week, specialized teams are responsible for weighing all the compost bins to establish an accurate report of what has been collected for each of the businesses.
This, with a view to the continuous training of traders and in order to adjust the equipment needs to be put in place in each trade.
The ICI (Institutions-Commerces-Industries) composting pilot project is the first of its kind on a commercial artery in Quebec.
Previous projects in the province were aimed more at large institutions, such as universities.
