Iranian journalists denounced, Sunday, October 30, the arrest of several of their colleagues by the authorities. They speak as power is shaken by the protest movement sparked in Iran following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.
The Reform Daily Sazandegi announced that “more than 20 journalists are still in detention”, especially in Tehran, but also in other cities. Several others have been summoned by the authorities, the newspaper adds.
According to local media, more than 300 Iranian journalists and photojournalists signed a statement to criticize the authorities for having “stopped [leurs] colleagues and deprived them of their citizenship rights after their detentions”. “They did not have access to their lawyers, were interrogated and charged before holding a public hearing”, can we read in the text. They call on the authorities to release the journalists.
In a statement published in the newspaper Etemadthe Tehran Journalists Association dismissed as “illegal” and “in conflict with freedom” of the press “the security approach” to the profession of journalism. The union body refers to a lengthy report released Friday by the country’s security services on the origins of the protests and “the interventions of the American regime in the recent riots” in Iran.
