high-school is undoubtedly one of the best recent series from Prime Video. Inspired by the memoirs of the iconic Canadian duo Tegan and Sara, this fiction recounts the very queer quest for identity of the Quin twins, wonderfully embodied by Railey and Seazynn Gilliland, and their first steps into the world of music.
If we no longer count the initiation stories put into images on our screens, high-school stands out in particular because it always offers several points of view of the same event and brilliantly highlights the contradictions inherent in adolescence. There are the looks of Tegan and Sara, of course, who have to – with difficulty – detach themselves from each other to forge their own personalities, but also the vision of other protagonists of the series such as that of Simone, their mother, also in the face of her inner turmoil. This is interpreted by the actress Cobie Smulders, whom we loved to follow in the guise of Robin Scherbatsky in How I Met Your Mother from 2005.
Sweet nostalgia is also a question in the series with the music and grunge aesthetics borrowed from the 1990s which have been making a strong comeback for some time. high-school is thus bathed in a delicious soundtrack, where we find so many Souvlaki Space Station of Slowdive that Kiss off by Violent Femmes and other titles by Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc. In the end, the series, which is not only intended for fans of Tegan and Sara, seduces by its audacity and its crazy charm.
