Kamaljit Arora, 45, was charged on Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his 13-year-old daughter Anzel and 11-year-old son Aaron. He is also accused of assaulting his wife by strangulation.
His appearance before a judge had already been postponed on Tuesday: Crown and defense lawyers had explained to the judge that in his condition, the accused had not been able to communicate with a lawyer since his arrest Monday evening.
Prosecutor Karine Dalphond told the judge on Wednesday that Mr. Arora’s condition had still not changed and that he was still unable to contact a lawyer or speak to investigators.
A further appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
The mayor of Laval, Stéphane Boyer, paid tribute Wednesday, in a message on Facebook, to the children Anzel and Aaron. He also laid flowers on an improvised commemorative monument, which is growing day by day, outside their house, rue Lauzon, in the Sainte-Dorothée district.
“I struggle to find the words to describe the infinite sadness of this tragedy, of which we still have so few details and which is already so revolting, wrote Mayor Boyer. That innocent lives are taken in such a horrible way is beyond comprehension and deeply shakes all Laval residents. »
The mayor also offers his condolences to the mother and older sister of the two dead children.
Youth Rights Commission
On its own initiative, the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse is looking into the tragedy that occurred in Laval.
She announced Wednesday that she will also investigate the triple homicide that occurred in Brossard on September 25. A mother and her two children aged two and five were found unconscious in their home on the South Shore of Montreal, after a fire alarm was triggered.
After verifying the situation of the children and considering the information alleged in the two files, the Commission says it has reason to believe “in lesions of rights”. In a statement, she said that “the investigation aims to verify whether the alleged facts are true and whether the rights of the four children have been respected. »
The purpose of this investigation is also to ensure that measures are taken so that such situations do not happen again.
When the investigation is complete, the Commission may make public recommendations, if any.
For reasons of confidentiality and protection, the Commission will not comment further on the investigation.
