Brut met the American designer Tommy Hilfiger, known around the world for his eponymous brand. The fashion designer talks about trends from previous decades, which are coming back into the spotlight.
“I think all the trends are coming back. And when these trends were in vogue, some of these people weren’t even born.“For Tommy Hilfiger, fashion is an eternal renewal. However, according to him, certain trends should remain in the closet. Brut asked him which are the fashions of the moment, dating from a few years back, that he prefers.
The big trend that comes straight from the 2000s, low-rise jeans. “I think low waists have a sexy side and high waists have a chic side.”, explains the creator. “With jeans, there has always been a yin and a yang: dark jeans, light jeans. Ripped jeans, chic jeans. High waist, low waist. It swings from one to the other and it comes back in cycles.” The sleeveless sweater is also making a comeback. “It has always been an essential of the men’s wardrobe, in its classic version. It’s not sexy, but it’s cool. I say that because my daughter, who lives in LA, wears it, but it’s not to be warm.”
But an accessory also on the front of the stage does not please him absolutely: the banana bag. “It may be necessary today, with cell phones and everything we have to carry. It reminds me of American tourists with the white ankle socks, the black sneakers, the cargo shorts and… not very cool. I think now it has become a necessity, rather than a corny accessory“, does he think.
