Five other people have died in North Carolina.

These official figures could still change. Some American media speak of an even heavier toll.

the hurricane Ian is one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the United States since the turn of the century.

However, its balance sheet remains much lower than that of Katrinawhich devastated Louisiana and killed 1,800 people in 2005.

Iana category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Florida, had submerged entire neighborhoods, destroying homes, bridges or power lines.

The hurricane then weakened as it moved towards the Atlantic, before strengthening again to hit South Carolina and then North Carolina.

Authorities said it would take months and $50 billion or more to rebuild Florida’s devastated coastal areas.
