Chambery joins the list of cities that have decided not to install giant screens
or fan zone to follow the FIFA World Cup in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. The town hall explains in a press release that the conditions in which the World Cup is organized are contrary to its humanitarian and ecological values. She also points to the recent awarding of the Asian Winter Games to Saudi Arabia.
Humanitarian and environmental reasons
Like Paris, Lyon, Marseille or even Grenoble and Annecy, the town hall justifies its decision by consistency with the efforts requested of the population: “at a time of energy sobriety, while the government is asking all French people to make substantial efforts and the City of Chambéry is preparing itself for an ambitious sobriety plan, the municipality refuses to commit public resources to contribute promoting an event that is environmental and social nonsense”.
Like his counterparts in large cities, the mayor of Chambéry mentions “the construction of air-conditioned stadiums in the middle of the desert, the daily air shuttles scheduled every 10 minutes after the matches are a climatic aberration; the working conditions of the workers who prepared the competition turned out to be a human disaster“. And to add: “through a collective mobilization joined by many cities, we are expressing our opposition to this type of organization disconnected from human and environmental values, so that the next international decisions in sporting matters take these issues into account.”
