Biden does not rule out meeting Putin during G20 summit

(Washington) US President Joe Biden on Thursday did not rule out a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during the G20 summit in November in Bali, Indonesia.

“That remains to be seen,” he told reporters, when asked about the possibility of talking directly with the Russian president during the summit.

The White House had previously said such a meeting was not impossible.

But the travel plans of the two leaders remain to be confirmed. The US executive said that if Vladimir Putin goes to the G20 summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should also attend, even if his country is not a member of the group.

Joe Biden had also said he was “sure” of having a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping if the latter came to Bali.

It is not certain that Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping will be present. The invasion of Ukraine has isolated Russia on the international stage, and the Chinese leader is limiting his overseas travel due to COVID-19.

In August, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in an interview with Bloomberg that the Russian and Chinese presidents would attend the summit.
