After the strategic victory of the Ukrainian army in Lyman, in the Donetsk region, the whole area must be secured so that the inhabitants can resume a normal life.
After Lyman’s release, the time is now for mine clearance. One of the first teams arrived at the entrance to the Ukrainian city on Tuesday 4 October. Their mission is extremely dangerous, but essential for life to resume. Vehicles abandoned after the fighting may be loaded with explosives. “We focus on the roads and the forest. We also put up signs to indicate mined areas”explains a man.
Deminers spend every square inch with a metal detector. They found grenades, several mines and the corpse of a Russian soldier. The few inhabitants left in the city are at the end of their tether, and many are hungry. “I worked 46 years, I never thought I would have to ask for food, I’m reduced to that”, laments a woman. Despite the victory, the Ukrainian army is still very active in the Lyman area, as Russian soldiers are said to be hiding in the woods.
