According to the government’s budget, purchasing power should increase by just under 1% in 2023. But are its forecasts realistic or overly optimistic?

In its budget, the government provides for a 0.9% increase in the purchasing power of the French in 2023. For this, the executive is counting on the revaluation of pensions, the thawing of the index point for civil servants, but also the tariff shield on energy and rising wages. However, some companies cannot guarantee that they will increase their employees’ wages by 4%. “We have machines that are very greedy and energy-consuming. (…) We will not be able to make firm and definitive decisions”says Christel Dias, administrative and financial director at Saekler.

Was the government too optimistic? “Growth and job creations are rather drawn within the optimistic upper bound”, notes Éric Heyer, economist and director at the OFCE. Gabriel Attal, Minister Delegate in charge of Public Accounts, remains confident in these forecasts. For its part, the Banque de France forecasts stable purchasing power in 2023.
