The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, does not intend to participate in the commemoration activities organized in Ottawa following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and invited the deputies to a “necessary reflection”, said he said Thursday.

Federal MPs were exceptionally gathered in the House on Thursday for a speech session in tribute to the Queen. The floor went first to the party leaders, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau got the ball rolling.
After the speaking time of the Leader of the Official Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, Mr. Blanchet made a point of offering, “in all simplicity” the Bloc’s condolences to “anyone who is grieving” and “to those who, among the people of England, are afflicted”.
“You will also understand that following the demonstrations of sympathy from the leaders, in the House, and following the agreed minute of silence, the Bloc Québécois members will withdraw from this chamber, leaving the elected officials of Canada to their demonstrations”, has subsequently launched the Bloc leader.
“The sensitivities of each deserve attention with regard to history. Indeed, the historic relationship between the crown of England and the Quebec nation is strewn with dramatic moments. Cruel, sometimes. History and values separate us irremediably,” he said.
Wanting to distinguish “the institution of the person” and “the politics of sincere sadness”, Mr. Blanchet concluded by inviting his colleagues in Parliament to a “necessary reflection”.
