Drunk, he flees the hospital after a swerve in the car

A drunk man who suffered serious injuries fled the hospital to avoid justice after an accident in which his vehicle caught fire in Chaudière-Appalaches on Friday.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Route 204, near the road to Peton and the Calvaire coast, in Saint-Pamphile. For some unknown reason, the man driving the vehicle allegedly swerved without any other vehicle being involved.

His car then caught fire. It was witnesses to the scene who extricated the driver from the vehicle who was then unconscious, explains Béatrice Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

Taken to hospital where he was treated for serious injuries that would not be life threatening, the man was also arrested for driving under the influence when he regained consciousness.

Several charges

“He was released by summons to appear, but early Saturday morning, the individual fled from the hospital center,” said Ms. Dorsainville.

The driver was however quickly arrested again by police officers who provided themselves with an arrest warrant and took him back to the police station.

He is due in court on Saturday to face charges of impaired driving, taking a vehicle without consent, assault, bail violation and breach of probation.
