In the four corners of France, tributes have been paid to the one who reigned for 70 years over England. British expatriates are particularly moved to have lost their sovereign.
France’s tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. In Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), a portrait on the Promenade des Anglais, flags at half mast and a ceremony full of emotion for the French as for the British. “She is a woman who was always there for us, with dignity and tenderness, it was the death of all Britons, so life without her will be hard”, admits an English expatriate in the south of France. In Gorron (Mayenne), where many inhabitants of British origin live, the disappearance of the queen is a shock. “She represents England”says a shopkeeper with a trembling voice.
In the Côtes-d’Armor, in Gouarec, the British meet around their passion for drawing, but very quickly, Elizabeth II invites herself into the discussions. “She hadn’t taken a day off, she just worked for us”, emphasizes Sheila Morris. In Rugles (Eure), David Mylchreest, a veteran, met the queen several times and has a very special image of her. “She is a beautiful woman and I think everyone is very sad today”, he comments. In some cities such as Lille (Nord), a register of condolences has been opened.
