At the end of a summer marked by forest fires, nature sometimes repairs itself faster than imagined. This is what happened in Australia, the victim of fires that ravaged millions of hectares in 2019.
On Kangaroo Island, Australia, only dead and charred trees are a reminder of the wave of fires the country experienced in 2019. Because nature has taken back its rights. Indeed, thousands of green eucalyptus now cover these burnt lands. In December 2019, Australia faced one of the worst environmental tragedies in its history.
For 240 consecutive days, the country was consumed. Twelve million hectares went up in smoke, the equivalent of a quarter of French territory. More than three billion animals have also been killed or relocated. In the sky, 200 million tons of carbon were released into the atmosphere. A gigantic amount of CO2, which made scientists fear the worst. But against all odds, young eucalyptus shoots have absorbed this carbon. The fauna and flora have now taken possession of the premises. The eucalyptus trees alone have enabled the forest to regenerate.
