Since 2012, children can participate in the management of maritime areas. The program of Educational Marine Areas was born from a beautiful story. In 2012, in the Marquesas Islands, following the intervention of a scientist on marine biodiversity in their school, young people wanted to take care of the coastal zone located just in front of their school. Three years later, the program is managed by the OFB, the French Office for Biodiversity. Today, 261 schools throughout the Metropolis, Corsica and Overseas are involved in the process. Supervised by their teachers and a natural space manager, the children study and actively participate in the management of their nearby marine environment. This year, teachers have until September 23 to register their classes for the Maritime Educational Areas program on the OFB website and apply for a grant to finance outings and scientific interventions. Are you parents of students? Speak to your children’s educational team. The initiative is also available in “Educative Terrestrial Areas” for all classes that are not located by the sea!
