Algeria could increase its gas deliveries by 50% to France. Negotiations are ongoing.
Negotiations are underway between Paris and Algiers for a 50% increase in deliveries of Algerian gas. This may seem like a lot, but in reality, gas represents only 20% of the French energy mix. In these 20%, Algeria is not the country that supplies the most gas to France. It is first Norway (36%), Russia (17%), then Algeria (8%). Thanks to its operator, Sonatrach, Algeria supplies 11% of the gas consumed in Europe, it is the leading exporter of natural gas in Africa and the seventh exporter of gas in the world.
In Europe, many countries are more dependent on Russian gas than France. Starting with Italy. Rome, before the Ukrainian crisis, supplied itself mainly in Russia, whereas its main supplier is now Algeria. Other countries, such as Spain, had negotiated with the Algerians earlier. Germany, on the other hand, is turning more to Norway or Canada, explains the journalist from France Télévisions, Julien Gal.
