Close to 200 people demonstratedthis Monday evening at Place Clemenceau in Pau, for the preservation of the right to abortion. Protesters demand its inclusion in the Constitution. In the United States, this right was revoked in several states last week, following the decision of the United States Supreme Court on June 24, 2022. In Pau, demonstrators held up signs and sang slogans in favor abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy).
“Nothing is acquired”
Several associative and political personalities first spoke in front of the crowd to recall the struggle that led in 1975 to the Veil law which officially authorized abortion in France. “This fight must continue because nothing is certain“, reminded the microphone a member of family planning.
In the rally, a majority of young women who say they are shocked by the American decision: “Everything is always to be conquered in the end. We thought this right acquired but the proof that not. Even here at home, we must remain vigilant”, says a 30-year-old who explains that she had an abortion eight years ago at the Bordeaux hospital in very difficult conditions. “They showed me a photo of the ultrasound, they made me listen to the heart of the fetus, they did everything to make me give up. We must fight to improve support for women.”
