(Montreal) Bonaventure MP Sylvain Roy, who has sat as an independent since he left the Parti Québécois (PQ) in June 2021, will not be in the running for the October elections.

Mr. Roy announced Monday that he was ending his political career on the provincial scene after three terms.
Although he considers “unpretentious” to have a chance of being re-elected, Mr. Roy ruled out the possibility of running as an independent candidate, arguing that a member without party affiliation “positions himself on all issues”.
“And the political offer of the other parties does not interest me,” he said at a press conference in his constituency office in Carleton, Gaspésie.
“I remind you that I am a pragmatic sovereigntist and that I do not adhere to dogmatic ideologies, often disconnected from reality, and clientelist behaviors that make political discourse repulsive given the smell of marketing that emanates from it”, continued the deputy.
Mr. Roy announced last year that he was leaving the PQ because of the bond of trust that had broken between him and the leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.
In 2020, rumors had circulated that Sylvain Roy had been courted by the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) of François Legault.
Mr. Roy denied this information on Monday. “I have never approached the CAQ or been approached, despite the rumors conveyed. Nobody can say that I was complacent with the CAQ, but I was not unpleasant either. I have always had a professional relationship with ministers,” he wanted to clarify.
Mr. Roy also took advantage of his announcement to take stock of his achievements over the past ten years.
