Around 11 a.m. Saturday morning, emergency services were called to Béram Street, a narrow residential road along the lake of the same name, in an area far from the center of L’Épiphanie, in Lanaudière.
The 911 call was about one of the world’s worst tragedies: a child was run over by a 34-year-old driver who was backing out of a private residence. The young child – whose age has not been made public by the Sûreté du Québec – found himself in the wrong place while trying to “recover an object on the ground”, specifies Nicolas Scholtus, public relations officer for the Sûreté du Québec . It was a toddler.
Resuscitation maneuvers were carried out on the spot. The child was then transported to the Pierre-Le Gardeur hospital in Terrebonne, where he was declared dead. The connection between the driver and the victim has not been revealed.
On site, “a collaboration was set up and started with psychosocial workers to offer support to those involved,” adds Mr. Scholtus.
Investigators from the major crimes division, as well as a reconstructionist, were dispatched to the scene to shed light on the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Further details are expected to be released to the public following the investigation.
