The lights didn’t flash

Enwèye, Rej, give me a shot!

Jean-Marc Parent did not utter his favorite phrase on Sunday evening at TVA, during his big return to television, 25 years after the launch of JMP time at TQS.

The Mercedes Band, aka Réjean Lachance and Alain Couture, has been replaced by a DJ who is a little too fond of song Sandstorm by Darude, a percussive and repetitive piece that sounds very bug of the year 2000.

Quebec has not flashed its lights or done “picking” on big Led Zeppelin. And Jean-Marc Parent did not break through the time allocated to him by TVA, which is one hour top time.

In fact, JMP’s first show (of four) looked like a super traditional comedy show, without the “happening” side that propelled JMP time at the top of the ratings chart.

Remember. To start his second season, in January 1997, Jean-Marc Parent even chartered a Boeing 767, which flew over Quebec for two hours.

On the TVA Sunday evening, it was a lot quieter and off, to be polite. The 59-year-old comedian, a notorious hypochondriac, spoke almost exclusively of the inconvenience of the pandemic. “Hey, was it just me washing her groceries?” Seriously, the damn masks, we are tired of finding them in motton in the back of our pockets! ”

The AstraZeneca “mard” vaccine, the cheaters who gathered at Christmas or the damn meetings in Zoom, the material was already dated. Who still wants to talk about COVID-19 now?

A very nice character, Jean-Marc Parent knows how to tell stories. He establishes a sincere connection with his audience (far too hilarious, though), whom he blithely addresses. With him, we feel between buddies, in a bubble of nostalgia, almost on vacation in an all-inclusive. We listen to old disco hits (I Feel Love, Love Trial) and we talk about gadgets. On several occasions, the comedian from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu had fun with robotic cameras, which he flattered like dogs. Once is okay. Three times is too much.

Jean-Marc Parent no longer hosts live like in the days of TQS, where his fans were part of a huge popular movement. We were in the JMP gang or we weren’t. This aspect of communion no longer exists.

The four hours of JMP were recorded at the Quebec City Armory in August under the leadership of director Jean-François Blais, who tried to modernize the JMP approach without distorting it.

Unfortunately, the type of anecdotal humor practiced by Jean-Marc Parent is less successful on TV in 2021. The attention span of viewers has shrunk in 25 years. At the slightest downtime, it zaps or it takes refuge on Netflix. We like the humor in short clips that are shared on social networks. We want it to roll, that it punches.

On his small stage connected to a catwalk, Jean-Marc Parent chatted with his technical team and called out to spectators, faithful to his habit. He told about his sleepless nights and blackmailed We go to the sun from Patrick Norman to the crowd.

In short, Jean-Marc Parent did what he does best: dissect the little things of everyday life with lightness and good humor. But is that enough to furnish four hours of television? Probably not, no.

A question of strategy

It is a classic that systematically emerges in the final sprint ofDouble occupation, on the way to the exotic trip (Punta Cana, in our case). The old clan rebels against the new nucleus. Like a kind of tribal war, where arrows aim at the heart, the place where our mountain friends “catch feels”.

Sunday night’s elimination was the least consistent of this entire season at Whistler. The quartet of elders who were promoted to the deliberation table crowned Philippe, the 26-year-old steelworker, as well as Sarah-Donia, the 27-year-old nurse clinician in the red envelope. A couple deemed “too strategic”.

Uh. Isn’t it even more strategic than getting one of the five couples out of reality TV and keeping four jaded players in the adventure who are no longer useful and who are almost begging their friends to send them back to Quebec? This is very hypocritical – some would even say wack – as an explanation.

Especially since this first batch of singles fromOD has been rambling for weeks that they favor love, the “vibe” and couples in each of their decisions. Be consistent. And honest. Frédérick and Audrey lost points by taking revenge in this way.

Also, it’s time for Alexandra, Clodelle, Jackson and Alex Yelle to pack their bags. They live on borrowed time and have no chance to sip too many colorful cocktails in the Dominican Republic.

And Clodelle and Alexandra don’t realize that by ostracizing model Marilou, scoffing behind her back and throwing spikes at her, they only increase her chances of winning the $ 600,000 jackpot with Robin. Fans never vote for bad candidates and instead take pity on the bullied.

Remember Mathieu’s debacle in South Africa, which sabotaged his predictable victory by calling Kevin drain, rot and waste. He and Claudie, still together two years later, were the darlings of the public before this verbal diarrhea cost them the condo and all the other babies.
