Thierry Breton, European commissioner for the internal market, is sorry “to see America taking the path it is taking”, and considers that Europe is the “last great democratic continent on the planet”.
“Europe is the last great continent that preserves rights”, declared the European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton on Monday June 27 on franceinfo. He finds “Sorry to see America taking the path it is taking”after the American Supreme Court buried a judgment which guaranteed the right to abortion in all the United States for half a century.
“Europe is the last great continent that preserves rights. The last great democratic continent on the planet. It gives us an immense responsibility for all of us and for women”he says, welcoming the fact that “For the immense and overwhelming majority of Member States, fortunately, this right is recognised”even if abortion is prohibited in Malta and difficult to access in Poland.
Thierry Breton says he is in favor, “personally”, to the inclusion of the right to abortion in the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. On the other hand, if he is not against the inclusion of this right in the French Constitution as proposed by the Renaissance group (LREM) in the National Assembly, he thinks with François Bayrou that it is not necessarily appropriate to do it because “everyone in France is unanimous in recognizing this right for women since the Veil law, it is an acquired right” and there are others “Immense priorities that are of extreme urgency for the country”such as inflation and the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
