(Montreal) The McGill University Conservatory of Music, which was inaugurated more than a century ago, will close its doors at the end of the summer.

The management explains that in recent years, the Conservatoire has experienced many difficulties, in particular because operating costs have increased.
The health crisis has also had a devastating effect on the functioning of the Conservatory. Before the pandemic, it had a teaching staff of nearly 100 members each year and welcomed more than 550 students who took private lessons there.
However, last year, teaching programs went virtual. The teaching staff numbered 62, and less than 300 students signed up for private lessons. Next year, in the best of cases, 100 students would have attended it.
The management claims that it is impossible to reverse this trend and that the Conservatoire is no longer financially viable.
The Dean of the School of Music, Brenda Ravenscroft, assures that the decision to close the Conservatory was extremely difficult to make, after careful consideration and rigorous analysis.
