With such a heat wave, the risk of fire is multiplied. In the Gard, in a few days, 184 hectares have already gone up in smoke.

They try to contain the fires that set the forest ablaze. From the sky or in the brush, near Nîmes (Gard), 133 firefighters faced the flames that grazed homes on Monday, June 13. This fire season is very early. They are favored by exceptional heat and dry soils. “Regarding the vegetation and its state, we can say that we are a month, a month and a half ahead of the classic seasons”explains Commander Jérôme Jallet, of SDIS 30.

The firefighters are therefore on the alert. In Charente-Maritime, vigilance is permanent. On towers, several cameras have been installed to trigger rescue at the slightest spark. “These indicators are based on the weather and the state of the vegetation. Depending on these indicators, which are communicated daily on a website, we adapt our system”, specifies Commander Samuel Cessac, of SDIS 17. The extremely fast harvest fires also threaten crops. To protect himself, a farmer met by France Televisions chose to work earlier in the morning and to avoid using machines that promote fires.
