Russia leaves the World Tourism Organization

Russia on Friday formalized its withdrawal from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) from which it was suspended in April following global outrage over its military offensive against Ukraine.

The government “accepts the proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry […] regarding the withdrawal of the Russian Federation from the World Tourism Organization,” says a decree signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Michoustin.

The UNWTO, a United Nations agency responsible for promoting tourism and based in Madrid since 1976, announced Russia’s suspension on April 27 because of its intervention in Ukraine, which it considered contrary to its “values”.

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is increasingly isolated on the diplomatic scene. For example, it was dismissed from the United Nations Human Rights Council, where its seat was suspended.

Western countries have also imposed heavy economic sanctions on Moscow.
