The heat wave expected throughout the week of May 9 could have consequences for the harvests of certain fruits and vegetables. This is already the case for tomatoes, whose prices on the stalls have soared. This is also explained by the rise in energy costs, as near Toulouse (Haute-Garonne).
Blue sky and almost summer heat in Bessières (Haute-Garonne), tomatoes seem very attractive on the market. But at €4.50 for beef hearts, almost €10 for cherry tomatoes, consumers are reluctant to fill their basket. “We will wait for them to grow in the garden”, says a customer. Prices are high and could remain so, according to a producer, who supplies wholesalers and supermarkets. Because if ripening finally accelerates, it is late.
It lacked sun at the start of the season. The wholesale price is 2 euros per kilo, ie 33% more than last year at the same time. And again, the greenhouses of Bessières recover the heat from an incineration plant, it has not suffered the increase in the price of gas. Barely filled, the crates of tomatoes are shipped without any surplus. The week of May 9, Clément Groleau, director of the Bessières greenhouses, will barely be able to meet his orders.
