Police unions have called for several rallies outside courts and police stations in France on Monday, May 2. The organizations intend to protest against the indictment for “intentional homicide” of the policeman who killed two men who forced a check on the Pont-Neuf in Paris on April 24.

About forty cities are concerned, according to the Alliance union at the initiative of these gatherings, joined by the Synergy officers’ union and the Unsa-Police. The largest gathering should be held at noon in Paris, on the Place Saint-Michel, a few hundred meters from the Pont-Neuf.

This is where the police officer opened fire on the driver of a car and his passenger, who tried to evade control, according to the police. The peacekeeper was indicted for “deliberate homicide” concerning the driver, “deliberate violence by a person holding public authority resulting in death without intention of giving it” concerning the front passenger and for “violence voluntarily aggravated by a person holding public authority” towards the rear passenger.

The Alliance union published a leaflet denouncing the “inadmissible decision” investigating judges to retain the criminal qualification of “voluntary homicide”. SGP Police unit chose not to “taking positions that could cause harm” to the colleague under investigation, presumed innocent, but asked “a court and specialized magistrates experienced in the difficulties of the police profession”. Alliance and Synergie are also calling for the establishment of a “presumption of self-defence” police officers.
