What should be the profile of the next head of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM)? Montrealers will be able to give their opinion on this subject, since Mayor Valérie Plante has announced that the selection process will be the subject of a public consultation.

Such a consultation “will make it possible to reflect the aspirations of the population, community groups, SPVM members and young people in the SPVM management selection process,” said Mayor Plante in a press release on Tuesday morning. “While we are in the process of building a Montreal model of urban safety, we are seizing the opportunity to involve the population in an important choice that concerns the daily lives of all Montrealers. »
The steps taken to replace the current police chief, Sylvain Caron, have therefore been put on hold, the time to organize the consultations.
Last month, the City of Montreal held a forum for the fight against armed violence. This forum “reminds us that consultation is an essential ingredient in public security strategies. As an administration, we have a responsibility to involve the population in the important choices that concern them, and the selection of the next person to head the police is a rare opportunity to be seized which will allow us to strengthen the proximity and the bond of trust between the SPVM and the society it serves,” noted the president of the executive committee and head of human resources for the City of Montreal, Dominique Ollivier.
Sylvain Caron announced in mid-March that he would retire on April 11.
The executive committee and the public safety commission of the City of Montreal have recommended to the Government of Quebec the candidacy of Sophie Roy as interim director of the SPVM. This proposal must then be ratified by Quebec.
“If so, Mr.me Roy would become the first woman to hold this position in the history of the Montreal police department. His vast experience in public security and his leadership would be assets to guide the SPVM until the appointment of a permanent director,” declared the head of public security within the executive committee, Alain Vaillancourt, in a press release.
